AlgaEnergy participated last Friday 6th December in the session “Biotechnology for facing climate change: A more protected, better fed and more sustainable society”, organized by the Spanish Association of Biobusinesses (AseBio) within the framework of COP25 that is taking place in Madrid. The panel discussed the different solutions of the biotechnology sector for the challenges of the future of our planet: a better fed society (functional and safer food), a sustainable and zero waste planet (cleaning, detection and treatment of water contaminants, revaluation of waste, reduction of CO2 emissions), more sustainable agriculture (more effective crops) and clean energy for all (biofuels).
Augusto Rodríguez-Villa, President of AlgaEnergy, was invited by AseBio to participate in this session and show how microalgae can play a fundamental role in responding to the three major challenges that our society is facing: food security, energy crisis and, of course in the case of this forum, the climatic crisis. In this sense, Rodríguez-Villa explained that microalgae are one of the most efficient CO2 biofixation systems on the planet and a source of high-quality food -they have been listed as the ‘food of the millennium’ by the UN- and they are also the precursors of clean, sustainable and inexhaustible biofuels of the future. In addition, these microorganisms can contribute effectively to food security, as there are already microalgae-based products that are playing a key role in increasing productive yields in agriculture. For this sector AlgaEnergy has developed and markets a range of highly effective agricultural biostimulants, based on these microorganisms, in whose cultivation CO2 from other industries which would otherwise have been emitted into the atmosphere, has been used.
AlgaEnergy is participating in two events that will take place at the Climate Summit COP25, which represents a milestone and highlights the role of microalgae in order to fight against climate change and the achievement of the SDGs of the Nations United. In addition to the participation in the panel organized by AseBio, the company is also participating in a session organized on Friday 13th also by AseBio, under the title “Bio-companies facing the climate emergency”. Along these lines, Augusto Rodríguez-Villa has indicated that “it is an extraordinary fact that the same company has been invited twice to participate in a framework of global scope such as COP25. This fact fills us with satisfaction and encourages us to continue working to become a leading actor in the fight against climate change. At AlgaEnergy, we look forward to the future with optimism and are firmly committed to guaranteeing more sustainable development”, adds Rodríguez-Villa.
