Students from different universities visited its facilities and discovered its most advanced technology.
AlgaEnergy wants to keep growing on the basis of knowledge. In fact, the company was founded 10 years ago to consolidate knowledge generated during more than 4 decades of research on the field of microalgae, much of it developed in Spanish universities. This basic knowledge has been applied by AlgaEnergy in the implementation of cutting-edge cultivation plants, recognized as the most advanced technology worldwide.
AlgaEnergy wants to correspond to the university community sharing the knowledge acquired throughout these 10 years of applied R&D, which have already allowed them to launch finished products based on microalgae. Therefore, and responding to a growing interest in learning about its technology, on November 23rd, AlgaEnergy organized a Doors Open Day on its Technological Platform for Experimentation with Microalgae (PTEM), the pilot plant located at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas International Airport.
More than 150 students from different universities were able to discover its facilities, the biomass production processes used and, in addition, to know the properties of microalgae and their potential for application in different industries such as agriculture, cosmetics and human nutrition, among others.
The Doors Open Day was attended by groups of students from the Complutense University of Madrid (students of the Master’s Degree in Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology and the Master’s Degree in Applied Vegetable Biology) and the Autónoma University of Madrid (students of the University Master’s Degree in Biotechnology). We also received a group of Biotechnology students from the European University of Madrid.
The future of the biotechnology sector
Augusto Rodríguez-Villa, AlgaEnergy’s President, highlighted that “it is a matter of social responsibility, but also of justice. AlgaEnergy was born thanks to the legacy of over 40 years of research in microalgae, much of it developed in Spanish universities. We do believe that our responsibility is to show the society what we do with microorganisms that are called to improve our life quality”. “In addition, these students are the future of the biotechnology sector in our country and for AlgaEnergy it is a satisfaction to be able to contribute to their academic training”, added Rodríguez-Villa.
Aware of the importance of a close relationship between the private sector and university centers for the promote the R&D, AlgaEnergy maintains agreements with six universities in Madrid such as UPM, San Pablo-CEU, UAM, UCM, Carlos III and Rey Juan Carlos, among others.
