It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly, and was celebrated on the 11th of February.
AlgaEnergy proudly joined the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which took place on the 11th of February. This day, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, aims to spotlight the need to achieve full and equal access to science for women and girls, and promote gender equality as well as the empowerment of women and girls.
In this framework, AlgaEnergy wanted to recognize the important contribution of women in the business environment in general, and in the field of science and R&D in particular. The company’s commitment to gender equality surpasses mere words and is demonstrated by the figures: 50% of AlgaEnergy’s team and 50% of the management is comprised by women. In addition, 75% of the women who work in the company are scientists, and carry out research projects in the field of microalgae, a sector in which AlgaEnergy is a reference worldwide.
In this sense, Augusto Rodríguez-Villa, AlgaEnergy’s President, highlights that “in AlgaEnergy we do advise, based on our own experience, the gender equality, a practice which has provided us the possibility of hiring the best collaborators and scientists”. “We do believe that the ‘gender gap’ is not only morally unacceptable, but also harmful from the business point of view, particularly in the knowledge-based society in which we live, where there is no gender primacy“, Rodríguez-Villa adds.
