AlgaEnergy, world leader in microalgae biotechnology, adds one more award to its long list of recognitions. On this occasion, the biotechnology company was given the Environmental Award 2020 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development of the Regional Government of Andalusia. With this award, the Regional Government distinguishes people, companies and entities that, over the last year, have notably stood out in the conservation, protection and spread of the environmental values of Andalusia in various disciplines.

AlgaEnergy has been awarded in the category of Circular Economy, a modality that recognizes initiatives that promote the transition to this type of economy, which encourages the reduction and recovery of waste and the reuse of products and recycling. As indicated by the organization, AlgaEnergy is “the company with the highest degree of innovation and environmental commitment in the microalgae sector“.

In this regard, Augusto Rodríguez-Villa, President of AlgaEnergy, pointed out that “it is undoubtedly a magnificent distinction for AlgaEnergy and a pride for the company’s human team. This award, and even more so the category in which we have been awarded, is an endorsement of our determined commitment to sustainability, and shows that AlgaEnergy is a true example of the circular economy on which our future development must continue to be based”, he added.

This is not in vain as AlgaEnergy uses greenhouse gases such as CO2 to feed the microalgae that the company grows in its production plants, since this by-product from other industries, is the main nutrient that these microorganisms need, to grow. This CO2 is obtained from Iberdrola’s combined cycle power plant in Arcos de la Frontera, Cádiz, on whose land the AlgaEnergy microalgae cultivation plant is also located.

The Malaga Provincial Council, the Port of Seville, the Association of Forestry Companies and Juan Calderón Rubiales, former director of the Doñana Biological Station, were also awarded winners.
